MOTTAI (MUNDAN) & KADU KUTHAL (EAR PIERCING)

MOTTAI : Prior arrangements :
NOTE : Any funtion happenning, we have a custom to call our close friends and relatives. All are given prasad of that day (+food etc). All ladies are given haldi, kumkum (gifts – optional).
We do namaskaram for all elders gathered and seek their blessings

During the function, in anyone can and wishes, nice songs can be sung.
* Mundan for the baby is usually done on the 11th month. Nowadays, it is done just a day before Ayushomam for the baby), get a new dress, tiny gold earring which is the necessity. Gold Chain also can be put for the baby. Earring, dress are got by grandparents-mothers parents. If they cant get it, we can buy ourselves for our baby.
* 5 Chekkili (Murukku), 2 Gopura(decorated with blouse pieces, haldi, kumkum & flower), 5 Urundai are brought by maternal grandparents as a custom for this function.
*Mundan, Ear piercing(Kadu kuthal) both are done in Kuladeivam temple.
* On the auspicious day & time for mottai, baby and father is made to wear minimum comfortable dress. Baby is made to sit on father’s lap. The person who does the mundan (All these people should be met prior and informed about the mundan. They would tell the latest procedures of the needs) will shave baby’s head.
* Immediatly, even before geting up from that place, AARTI is taken for father and baby.
(AARTI – mix few spoons of water, turmeric powder, chunna, akshadai and take aarthi)
* They take bath immediatly, to avoid any hair fall spreading over. The old dress what father and kid wore during mundan is left there. They are not got back home
*Spread baby’s head with nice sandalwood powder paste, which is a coolant
* Let baby wear new dress
KAADU KUTHAL (EAR PIERCING)
* Ear piercing for baby is done on the same day of Mottai. Right after mottai, once baby and father dress up, the family goes into the temple hall where ear piercing can be done.
*Baby is made to sit on mama’s (mothers brother/ cousin brother) lap. (If mama is not there father’s lap) on a mat.
* Check on hygenic piercing. Such piercing can be done for baby.
* Then take another aarthi(as told above) for baby, baby’s parents, sibling, mama all together.
After the function is over, the mothers parents are made to sit down on a mat. They should be given back 1Gopura 2 Urundai 2murukkus of each type, to them. Tamboolam and any gift should be given to them.

Sorry for the delay Sir. I dint see the message as i was out of station.
In every month there are muhurthas for performing Mottai – which includes Chithirai month too. Yes you can do in Chithirai, during those Muhurtha days.
Normally as you know it is auspicious to perform munday for baby during 11th month. Check out the auspicious date during this month and perform the mottai.
This is the normal procedure. In case you have a family prohid, please ask him so that he can guide you for your family procedure ways.
